Microbeads have been making waves (for all the wrong reasons) in the beauty industry. In the past few years, the media has really shone a spotlight on just how detrimental microbeads are to our planet.
What are microbeads?
Microbeads are minuscule beads of plastic commonly found in beauty products such as exfoliators and body scrubs. Used to buff the skin, they have been circulating since the 1970s.
In the last decade, the use of microbeads in beauty products has increased with some face washes, shampoos with even toothpaste containing the alarming ingredient. While most manufacturers won’t include the term ‘microbead’ in their ingredients list, the terms ‘polypropylene’ and ‘polystyrene’ are general indicators microbeads are present in the product.
How do microbeads damage the environment?
Microbeads are made from plastic and when used in beauty products, they cannot break down. Instead, microbeads are washed down the sink and invariably end up in our rivers, lakes and oceans.
Microbeads contain toxic chemicals which when ingested by our marine life, can cause irreversible damage. To make matters worse, when we ourselves farm and consume fish, we are also ingesting microbeads. It’s a neverending cycle that’s harmful to all involved.
Just one beauty product containing microbeads can result in 5,000 to 100,000 microbeads being released into the ecosystem.
What action is being taken against microbeads?
In positive news, the American Food & Drug Authority has banned the use of microbeads in cosmetic and beauty products with both America and Canada listing microbeads as a toxic ingredient.
In Australia, the use of microbeads isn’t yet banned. However, large supermarket chains like Woolworths, Coles and Aldi are taking action by banning products that contain microbeads from sale.
Meet the alternative: Jojoba Peeling Cream
Our Jojoba Peeling Cream is a mild mechanical exfoliant that re-surfaces and smooths the complexion. Containing all-natural spheres of jojoba wax, not only are the beads planet-friendly, but they also break down during the exfoliation process leaving the waterways clear.
Jojoba Peeling Cream is a crowd-pleaser
Jojoba Peeling Cream is suitable for all skin conditions. Because of the spherical jojoba beads the skin will not be scratched or irritated. The result? Pores are thoroughly cleaned while dead skin will be removed without damaging the skin’s protective mechanism.
Over-exfoliation can strip the acid mantle. It’s best used twice per week to remove blackheads, treat congestion, improve skin vitality and minimise flaking.
During a client facial, Jojoba Peeling Cream can be massaged under vapour zone steam to enhance the benefits.
