What Causes Stressed Skin?
Stressed skin is usually the result of either environmental aggravation or hormonal changes. If environmental stressors are affecting your clients’ skin, you will notice increased redness, irritation and accelerated skin ageing.
Mental and physical stress increases the production of the hormone cortisol which triggers our body’s natural fight or flight response. This is a good thing if we’re in a life or death situation but for everyday stress and prolonged stress, it’s not ideal.
Cortisol triggers testosterone which increases oil production in the skin. Too much sebum in the skin can lead to blocked pores. Couple that with the increase of skin inflammation and immune suppression so often seen with prolonged stress and it’s no wonder the skin suffers.
Identify Problem Areas
Is your client suffering from stressed skin? If so, you’ll notice at least one of these symptoms during your consultation: eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, redness, irritation, a dull complexion and breakouts.
Take note of premature ageing, dark circles and skin imperfections as they are generally the result of inadequate sleep which is common when stressed.
Identify your clients’ key contributing factors to treat their skin effectively.
Educate
If your client is suffering from stressed skin, it’s really important they look after their skin. While it’s tempting to reach for every skincare product, it’s counterproductive.
Avoid:
- Over-cleansing the skin strips the skin’s natural barrier function.
- Over-exfoliating removes the skin’s protective layer leaving it vulnerable to further skin conditions.
- Alkaline or very acidic skincare products create an imbalance in the skin resulting in redness, itching and tightness.
- Skincare products that cause stinging, itching, blotches, tightness can indicate a skin reaction.
- Irritants such as cleaning products laden with chemicals, metals, nickel and rubber can increase skin inflammation.
- Food products such as gluten, dairy, MSG, wine and soy can cause skin reactivity.
Stressed and inflamed skin has four contributing factors that should be taken into account when providing effective skincare solutions. Speak with your client to find the source of their skin discomfort.
Genetic history and disorders, topical irritants, food intolerances, environmental stressors and hormone fluctuations can contribute to and exacerbate symptoms.
