Ageing skin is due to unavoidable chronological ageing is a natural part of life. Scientific research into extrinsic skin ageing shows we can minimise and counteract the effects through healthy lifestyle choices and targeted biomimetic skincare.
Signs of premature skin ageing
When comparing skin from other areas of the body that have been protected from harsh environmental stressors to the skin on your face, neck and hands you will notice a difference in the appearance of the skin. This is due to premature ageing. Also, take note of:
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Pigmentation
- Sagging
- Uneven texture
- Uneven tone
- Loss of elasticity
- Loss of skin density
Causes of skin ageing
The three main causes of skin ageing are dehydration, inflammation and oxidation. Usually, all are present in aged skin as they are commonly linked.
Dehydration can lead to many problems including redness, low-level inflammation, pigmentation shifts and sensitivity. Dehydration leads to constant moisture loss compounding the issue. Replenishment is vital and an ongoing journey to ultimate skin health.
Low-level inflammation in the skin can lead to the formation of enzymes that destroy collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This leaves the skin in a state of sub-clinical inflammation which causes damage to the vital structures of the skin.
Oxidation slowly starts to ‘rust’ the skin function creating damage to collagen fibres and elastin whilst affecting hydration levels and pigment production. Oxidation of the skin is an oxygen imbalance that is accelerated by sun exposure, smoking pollution, medications, stress, lifestyle and diet. Oxidation essentially prevents our skin from ‘bouncing back’ from extrinsic stressors which compounds as we age.
When all three factors are present, the skin loses its vitality, smoothness and radiance.
Extrinsic lifestyle factors
Extrinsic causes of skin ageing are, to varying degrees controllable. They include exposure to the sun, pollution, smoking, frequent alcohol use, diet, medications, sleeping positions and of course, overall health.
The sun causes 80 per cent of skin ageing*
The sun emits two primary forms of rays, UVB and UVA. UVB is a short wavelength that promotes the majority of its damage in the upper layers of the skin. This damage includes sunburn, dehydration, inflammation and the appearance of age spots. Unfortunately, exposure to UVB causes irreparable disintegration of collagen fibres, overstimulation of pigmentation and the formation of skin cancer.
Both UVB and UVA cause DNA damage, oxidation and the deactivation of essential nutrients – most notably, vitamin A.
Vitamin A works to boost collagen production which treats wrinkles and ageing skin.
Prevent premature skin ageing
Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the first step to preventing and minimising the effects of premature skin ageing. Along with staying out of the sun and applying SPF every day, there are steps you can take for your overall skin health.
Forgo the alcohol, cigarettes, refined carbohydrates and increase nutrient-dense foods such as:
- Foods high in Omega 3 like salmon, almonds and flaxseed oil
- 8-10 cups of vegetables per day
- Beans and lentils
- Unprocessed grains such as quinoa, oatmeal and brown rice
- Healthy oils such as coconut oil, rice bran oil and olive oil
Ensure you are staying hydrated and drinking 8-10 cups of water per day.
Treat premature skin ageing
The 5 main functions of the skin are:
- Regulate water levels
- Regulate temperature
- Regulate PH
- Protect against UV
- Protect against bacteria
As skin ages whether through intrinsic or extrinsic factors, the skin’s natural functions cease to function as they should.
To keep the skin healthy and performing at its optimal level, you must rebalance the skin’s acid mantle. The acid mantle is the skin’s only barrier and the only natural skin cream. Ageing will naturally cause the acid mantle to break down.
Biomimetic Skincare for ageing skin
Here at Dr Spiller, we use biomimetic products that mimic the skin’s natural functions.
Repairing the acid mantle is paramount to all skin conditions. We developed HY-TEC™ technology to replicate the skin’s acid mantle very closely. Active ingredients have been shown to absorb 120% more effectively for longer-lasting hydration.
Our solution includes the use of liposomes in water-based cream. Liposomes are tiny spheres of oil that mix with the skin’s natural sebum to deliver active ingredients directly into the skin.
Vitamin A Night Cream
The natural production of vitamin A decreases as we age and is almost halted when skin is damaged by the sun. Vitamin A is essential and works to:
- Normalise how the skin functions
- Balance the production of excess sebum (frequently caused by oxidation)
- Reduce the appearance of pigmentation (a marker for aged skin)
- Promotes the production of collagen (essential for skin renewal)
- Speeds up the healing process
- Heals and maintains a healthy dermis and epidermis (the top two layers of skin)
Vitamin A Night Cream is an intensive anti-ageing night cream formulated to reduce the appearance of fine lines, visibly improve the skin’s resilience and hydration resulting in a smoother complexion.
The unique formulation of Vitamin A Night Cream biomimetically replicates the skin’s own natural barrier function for moisture protection. The use of Vitamin A derivative visibly reduces signs of ageing without inflammation or irritation. Vitamins A, C & E working together produce an antioxidant cocktail to visibly restore moisture and skin repair.
